Who am I?

Hello! My name is Cat Dinh, and I am Delta Sigma Pi’s VP of Marketing at SCU. I joined DSP last fall as a Sophomore and am now a Junior. Keep reading to hear my take on why you should join a business fraternity, what makes DSP unique, and to see all our recruitment information for next week!

Why join a business fraternity?

I would recommend anyone who is studying business at Santa Clara University to join a business fraternity. Whether you recruit with us or AKPsi (Santa Clara’s other business fraternity), both have so much to offer regarding professional development, alumni networks, and brotherhood. No matter what year in school you are, it is important to be surrounded by others who are as driven as you and will push you out of your comfort zone! Peer mentorship, professional events, and the pledge process are also exceptionally helpful in learning real world skills such as resume building, interviewing tips, and networking. In my experience, these are skills that I did not learn as in depth anywhere else, and peer mentorship, which allows me to learn from others’ experiences, has been especially invaluable to me.

What makes DSP unique?

Delta Sigma Pi has over 270 collegiate chapters, 100 alumni chapters and contacts, and 240,000 total members. At a surface level, something that sets us apart from other business fraternities is that all SCU DSP brothers are a part of the Leavey School of Business. This means that you will constantly cross paths with your brothers in an academic setting. Especially when it comes to tougher upper division classes, having people you know well and are able to trust in your classes is advantageous when it comes to group projects and studying for exams. This also means that more of your brothers will have similar career goals, and many older members will have already recruited for internships at companies you’re interested in. Going through internship recruiting seasons together and getting tips (and referrals!) from other brothers provides both a strong support system and a leg up against others applying for the same roles. Personally, many DSP members I know have gotten their summer internship opportunities through other brothers, alumni, or through networking at our professional events!

Although all professional fraternities boast a tight knit brotherhood, something about our chapter feels unique to me. Here’s a confession: When I first became a pledge for DSP, I wasn’t sure I would fit in with my pledge class. I was a year older than most of my pledge brothers, and our schedules often didn’t line up to spend time together outside of official meetings. I felt disheartened, and thought that it just wasn’t meant to be. However, this was way before I realized how persistent my pledge brothers are, and whether I liked it or not they forced their way into my life (thank goodness!). Now we are truly family and best friends, and I can’t imagine life without them! This isn’t just unique to our pledge class either. Other DSP brothers study abroad together, work together, and are still incredibly close even after graduation. After almost a year as an official brother, I can confirm that Deltasig friendships really do last a lifetime.
