Keane's In-Person Recruitment Survival Guide
Hi everyone! My name is Keane Ching and I am your Winter 2023 - Spring 2023 Pledge Educator. I remember my time going through recruitment, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and that made me pretty nervous. It was my first introduction to the business world which at the time I knew nothing about. After the week was over, I was shocked by how much I learned and grew personally, and I hope you have the same experience! But, here are some tips so you don’t have to go into recruitment completely cold turkey.
Be yourself
The best thing you can do during not only DSP recruitment but in the workplace is to be yourself! DSP prides itself on our professionalism, but we also want to see your fun personality too. We love seeing prospects come out who are passionate about their hobbies and future careers.
Imagine this scenario: You are interviewing two people for a job. One candidate has a perfect resume, but they don’t seem interested in getting to know the company or growing themselves when hearing their interview responses. The other candidate is growing their professional self and might not have as much experience as the first candidate, but their great personality shines through and you believe they can grow into a fantastic employee. Which would you choose?
All in all, find that balance between professional and personal!
2. Keep an open mind
Sometimes, it’s hard to know what to expect out of recruitment. You know there is a resume workshop and individual interview, but what will that look like when you’re actually in the room? It’s hard to tell! This is why it is best to keep an open mind when going through the week.
We want all of the prospects to get something out of recruitment week! I gained so much knowledge during my recruitment and learned things about myself I never knew before. Whether it’s resume work or interview practice, there are countless things to take in. So come out, have fun, and learn!
3. Ask questions
All of the brothers are here for you during recruitment week, so don’t be afraid to go up to brothers and ask questions! Remember, there are no stupid questions, we are happy to answer anything. Sometimes it’s even easier for us to get to know you and find out what major you’re interested in or what career path you want to pursue from your questions.
4. Reflect before interviewing
Something I did during my recruitment was take time to reflect before my individual and group interviews. I thought about how I wanted to push my growth mindset within my responses and what frame of thinking I wanted to have. I asked myself questions such as, “What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? Why am I here for recruitment?” After understanding my answers, it made things much easier as I had a good understanding of myself! After I reflected and finished my interviews, I realized I wasn’t as nervous as I was during prior interviews.
Bonus interview tip!
Practice for your interview in front of a mirror. It is hard to notice the tics and fidgeting you do naturally until you see for yourself. Once you know how you look and convey your answers, it helps you understand how you’re being seen by the brother during your interview.
5. Take time to relax!
All the brothers know that recruitment can be fun but also stressful. We all felt that nervousness during our own recruitment process! We encourage all prospects to take some time during the week to relax and take their mind off of recruitment. Go outside, do a fun hobby, and make time for your friends when you’re not preparing for the week. We want everyone to be successful and it’s hard to do so if you’re stressed throughout the whole week, so make time for you!
I hope this blog post helped clear up some questions you might have had about recruitment! We are all so excited to get to meet you on day one, see you there!
